The Eric Conn Story: How One Attorney Swindled Millions and Jeopardized Thousands of Disability Recipients

On April 2, CNBC ran a one-hour special covering the misdeeds of Kentucky native Eric Conn, who pleaded guilty to numerous counts of fraud. Conn represented thousands of Social Security Disability and Supplemental Security Income applicants, mostly in eastern Kentucky. He devised a scheme creating false medical evidence and ensuring that his cases were considered by one judge in particular who would grant benefits to his clients. There is no evidence (or even any credible allegation) that any of Conn’s clients knew about his fraudulent scheme.

As a result of Conn’s actions, the Social Security Administration has required thousands of Conn’s former clients undergo redeterminations of their disability. Unfortunately, Conn’s firm destroyed most client files once he found out he was under investigation, oftentimes including the only remaining copies of medical evidence that claimants could use to support their applications for disability benefits.

A large team of attorneys across the U.S. have stepped up to volunteer to represent Conn’s former clients, including Carol L. Herdman. The effort is being coordinated by The Appalachian Research and Defense Fund (AppalReD), which can be contacted at ardfky.org
