What Benefits are Available for Family if My SSD Application is Approved?
If your Social Security Disability application is approved, certain members of your family also can receive monthly benefits, including your spouse if he or she is age 62 or older, as well as your children under 18 who are still in school, or who also are disabled if disabilities began before age 22.
Each family member can receive up to 50 percent of the monthly amount you receive, however, there is a monthly family maximum amount that can be paid in total. The typical family maximum amount is approximately 150 to 180 percent of your individual monthly benefit amount.
Your divorced spouse may be entitled to benefits if you had been married 10 or more years, and he or she is age 62 or older and is unmarried. Your ex-spouse’s benefits do not affect the amount of benefits other family members can receive.
