What are Compassionate Allowances?
The Social Security Administration (SSA) recognizes certain conditions that will automatically lead to an award of disability benefits. These conditions include certain types of cancers, brain disorders, and significant rare diseases. For some conditions, simply being diagnosed will allow an automatic award of disability benefits. Some conditions require a diagnosis plus certain results upon testing.
Once the SSA determines that a compassionate allowance is supported by the medical record, it will not require a claimant to undergo the remainder of the typical disability application process, such as providing a work history. This permits benefits to be awarded much sooner than normal.
The complete list of conditions that can be considered for a compassionate allowance can be found here.
